Stevie Nicks has become a larger than life figure not only in music, but also in popular culture. Just saying her name evokes a unique sense of style and purpose. We identify with her because she is both unreachable as an icon and bonafide rock star, but also reflects the dreamer in all of us. Her struggles are well documented, both in the countless books written about her, and in her own words in the songs she’s given us for more than a generation.

The idea to record an album of her songs came out of a show we’d put together playing her material as a semi acoustic duo. Playing the songs in a relatively intimate setting (within reason) allowed the songs to connect with audiences differently, and allowed us to interpret them with the love and admiration they deserve. So the idea was to record these songs relatively simply, stripping away the layers of production from her original recordings. It’s not an unplugged record, or even a ‘quiet’ record. It’s just a simple reading of these incredible songs, done in tribute to an important artist, and someone who we’ve admired and been inspired by for most of our lives.

John Drumbo French from Captain Beefheart and The Magic Band worked with Thompson on two albums along with Fred Frith and Henry Kaiser. Those two French, Frith, Kaiser and Thompson albums led me to this. Also, Richard Thompson taught Hugh Cornwell (of The Stranglers) how to play the bass guitar in a band when they were both at the same school (Emil and The Detectives?). With a career spanning 50 years and playing with two of my heroes (French and Cornwell) Thompson has produced a fascinating EP. yellowcakeuf6
